Practice 1 (FP1) usually takes place on Friday and allows teams and drivers to familiarise themselves with the track and conditions. They focus on initial car set-up and gather data on tyre performance and track characteristics.
Practice 2 (FP2) usually takes place 2-3 hours after (FP1). It gives teams another opportunity to fine-tune set-up and gather additional data. During this practice session, drivers can also simulate race conditions.
Practice 3 (FP3) usually takes place on Saturday prior to qualifying. This practice serves as a final opportunity for teams to make adjustments before qualifying. FP3 is often used to confirm the effectiveness of setup changes made based on data collected in FP1 and FP2.
Qualifying determines the starting grid for the race. It consists of several elimination rounds (Q1, Q2 and Q3), with the slowest drivers eliminated after each round until the fastest drivers are competing for pole position in the third round.
Race is the main event of the weekend. The race takes place on Sunday afternoon. Drivers compete in a predetermined number of laps, which typically measure approximately 305 kilometres (approximately 190 miles). Pit stops, tyre management and strategy play a key role in determining the outcome of the race.
While Formula 1 is the headline act, the race weekend is packed with top-tier action from exciting support series. Below you’ll find a quick rundown of FIA Formula 2, Formula 3, and Porsche Supercup — all of which regularly run alongside F1 on Grand Prix weekends.
FIA Formula 2 (F2)
F2 is the main feeder series to Formula 1, showcasing the best young talent ready to make the leap to the big stage. All teams use identical cars, so the focus is entirely on driver skill. Each race weekend includes a Sprint Race and a Feature Race, both often full of drama, strategy, and overtakes. Recent F2 graduates include Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Gabriel Bortoleto or Isack Hadjar.
FIA Formula 3 (F3)
F3 is a highly competitive junior series featuring large grids and close racing. It’s a key training ground for young drivers, many of whom are in their late teens. The cars are slightly less powerful than F2, but the battles are just as intense, making it a fan favorite for pure racing action.
F1 Academy
This all-female single-seater series features identical Tatuus F4 cars and showcases some of the most promising young talents in motorsport. Racing alongside select F1 weekends, F1 Academy delivers competitive, wheel-to-wheel action as drivers fight to prove themselves on the global stage. Expect fierce battles, rising stars, and a glimpse into the future of Formula 1.
